Maranamass 2025 Movie Review
The “memeification” of screenplays can be a hit when done right, and Maranamass nails it. At its heart is Luke (Basil Joseph), a YouTuber and self-styled “sigma male” who’s a neighborhood nuisance with his bold stunts—like plastering the panchayat president’s search history on walls or listing the local police station for sale to mock idle cops. So, when elderly residents start getting murdered, suspicion naturally falls on him.
Maranamass isn’t aiming to be a whodunit, so the serial killer’s identity is revealed early. He roams openly, wielding a specific banana variety as his quirky weapon, stuffing it in victims’ mouths—a darkly funny nod to the clues killers leave in thrillers. He’s just one of many oddball characters propelling the film, which moves briskly through sharp, episodic scenes until it slightly drags during a prolonged bus sequence.
Along for the ride are Luke’s kickboxer girlfriend Jessie (Anishma Anilkumar), armed with a pivotal bottle of pepper spray; a bus driver (Suresh Krishna) eager to tie the knot; a bus conductor (Siju Sunny) still hunting for his long-lost father; an old man ousted from home for predatory behavior; a police officer (Babu Antony) splitting his time between chasing the killer and searching for his missing dog; and bus owner Kumaran Asan, a retired teacher who’s named his buses Veenapoovu and Duravastha.
