Mercy For None Season 1 Review
Netflix’s new K-drama Mercy For None delivers on its brutal title, offering no reprieve, especially from its protagonist, Nam Gi-jun. A former gangster turned vengeance-driven avenger, Gi-jun (So Ji-sub) embarks on a merciless quest after his younger brother, Gi-seok (Lee Joon-hyuk), is killed. From start to finish, Gi-jun’s singular mission is clear: make everyone responsible for his brother’s death suffer, no matter the price.
The plot is simple and familiar: a suspicious death sparks a bloody pursuit of justice. Set in a gritty criminal underworld, the story revolves around the fragile truce between two rival gangs, Ju-woon and Bong-san, which collapses when Gu Jun-mo (Gong Myung), the volatile son of gang leader Gu Bong-san, orders Gi-seok’s murder, igniting Gi-jun’s wrath.
So Ji-sub embodies Gi-jun with his trademark icy composure, seen in roles like Doctor Lawyer and A Company Man. His character is unrelenting, driven by grief and rage, leaving a trail of bodies and broken bones in his wake. If you had any part in Gi-seok’s death, survival is not an option.
Though the narrative treads well-worn territory, the cast elevates it. Gong Myung, typically cast in gentle, romantic roles, surprises as the unhinged Gu Jun-mo, whose unpredictable rage and chilling presence make him a compelling antagonist.
