Phule Movie 2025 Review
The story opens in 1897 Pune, where the bubonic plague ravages the city, forcing a mass exodus and claiming the life of Savitribai Phule (Patralekhaa). From this somber moment, the narrative flashes back to Savitribai’s youth, where her husband, Jyotiba (Pratik Gandhi), nurtures her curiosity through education. Jyotiba, appalled by the caste oppression in his village, champions education for girls and marginalized communities as a catalyst for reform.
Their efforts face fierce opposition from upper-caste Brahmins, who resort to vandalism, and Jyotiba’s traditionalist father, Govindrao (Vinay Pathak), who rejects his son’s progressive ideals. Undaunted, Jyotiba leaves home, supported by his friend Usman Sheikh and Usman’s sister Fatima, to continue his educational mission. Their work grows to include widow rehabilitation, earning recognition but no funding from the British administration. To sustain their cause, Jyotiba sells his family property, while orthodox groups mount legal challenges against them.
Pratik Gandhi’s portrayal of Jyotiba is understated yet powerful, conveying the reformer’s resolve with quiet intensity. Vinay Pathak, though briefly on screen, leaves a mark as the rigid Govindrao. Joy Sengupta lends authenticity to his role as a casteist antagonist. Patralekhaa, however, steals the spotlight, embodying Savitribai’s strength and compassion with remarkable depth. The film’s cinematography vividly captures the essence of 19th-century Maharashtra, enhancing its historical authenticity.
