Costao 2025 Movie Review
Costao is a biographical crime drama centered on Costao Fernandes (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), an upright customs officer in 1990s Goa, determined to dismantle a gold smuggling racket orchestrated by the influential politician and smuggler D’Mello (Kishore Kumar G). Costao, a devoted husband to Maria (Priya Bapat) and father to two sons and a daughter, sacrifices his personal life for duty, much to his wife’s frustration over his absence at home. Acting on a tip about a massive 1500 kg gold smuggling operation, Costao intervenes, only to find himself ensnared in a dangerous web. Framed and hunted by corrupt police and D’Mello’s goons, he becomes a fugitive fighting to clear his name. The story unfolds as Costao battles a corrupt system to prove his innocence, raising the question: will he triumph, or will the forces of power and politics prevail?
Directed by Sejal Shah, Costao is a commendable effort that falls short of its potential. Shah strives to craft an engaging narrative, but the film settles into mediocrity. The screenplay, penned by Bhavesh Mandalia and Meghna Srivastava, lacks the spark needed to elevate the story. While the dialogues are effective, the film’s pacing drags, particularly in the second half. The first half captivates with its intensity, but the narrative loses momentum post-interval, failing to maintain its grip.
Rafey Mahmood’s cinematography shines, vividly capturing Goa’s scenic beauty and gritty underbelly. However, Unnikrishnan Payoor Parameswaran’s editing feels sluggish, with the film’s 2-hour-5-minute runtime feeling overstretched. The songs, composed by Ajay Jayanthi and Ketan Sodha, are unmemorable and add little to the experience. On a positive note, Ketan Sodha’s background score is impactful, enhancing the film’s tense moments.
