Thudarum 2025 Movie Review

Mohanlal as a family man is familiar territory, having delivered iconic performances like Drishyam, a film often compared to Thudarum pre-release. While both feature Mohanlal as an everyman fiercely protective of his family, Thudarum diverges in tone, performance, and execution. Unlike Drishyam’s cerebral twists, Thudarum is raw, emotionally intense, and crafted for mass appeal.

Director Tharun kicks off with a gripping five-minute sequence that hooks viewers for the two-hour ride. The title card, pairing Mohanlal’s name with a lone tusker’s silhouette, subtly hints at his character Benz (Shanmugham)’s spirit animal—an elephant, calm yet ferocious when provoked. Tharun smartly leverages Mohanlal’s charisma early on, blending playfulness with self-deprecating humor referencing his real-life persona and past films. Shobana, as Benz’s Tamil-speaking wife, shares palpable chemistry with Mohanlal, delivering a solid, if not demanding, performance.

The film shifts gears when Benz’s car is wrongfully seized by police, turning dark and intense. Jakes Bejoy’s thrilling score amplifies Benz’s emotional spiral—from carefree to shocked, guilty, and enraged. Mohanlal navigates these shifts with ease, with extended shots capturing his raw intensity, especially in a gut-wrenching washroom breakdown where he collapses in despair.
